SUGGESTED WAYS TO PREPARE FOR A NATIONAL EMERGENCY

With FBI Director Christopher Wray, warnings of a heightened national security terrorist warning alerts, this might be a good time to keep a checklist of items you may need in the event we have a national emergency that can adversely affect us.  One example would be an attack on our national electric grid which would bring our country to a standstill.  Listed below are a list of items you may want to keep on hand if just such an emergency occurs.

Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation – 3 gallon empty containers can be bought at Walmart for $10 each

Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food – my favorite food to keep a supply of is peanut butter and crackers, canned vegetables, canned meats and canned tuna.  Don’t forget dry milk

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries –  Midland Emergency Crank Weather Radio with  rechargeable batteries and a solar panel

Flashlight with signal-strobe

First aid kit

Whistle to signal for help

Cell phone with portable battery charger

local maps to avoid getting lost

Emergency contact numbers

Faraday bags to protect your laptop, cell phones and other electrical devices from an EMP strike – can be bought on Amazon

FEMA RECOMMENDED EMERGENCY CHECKLIST

large supply of moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation, paper towels

cleaning products – household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – when diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant.  Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water.  Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added  cleaners

infant formula and diapers

Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof portable container

Cash or traveler’s checks and change

Emergency reference material such as first aid books

sleeping bags or warm blankets for each person

Complete change of clothing, sturdy shoes, jackets, extra socks

Fire Extinguisher

Matches in a waterproof container

Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items

Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels

Paper and Pencils

Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Water purifier for converting water from a water source such as a creek – Geopress Filter and Purifier – Removes viruses plus bacteria and protozoa, improves taste, smell and clarity.  Filters microplastics PFAS and lead – can be bought in outdoor/camping stores

Single burner propane stove – Ozark Trail – buy with several portable propane containers

Coleman River Gorge Rugged Latern – 4 D batteries needed

Dyna-Glo Portable Kerosene Convection Heater ( can use to heat the inside of your house)   $159 at Lowes    Lowes also sells the kerosene in 2.5 gallon containers to fuel the heater
