2000 WINNING ESSAY BY PETER BUTTIGIEG PRAISING BERNIE SANDERS

Sunday, February 16th, 2020

The following winning essay complimentary of Bernie Sanders was written by Peter Buttigieg while in high school in 2000.    Nancy

2000 WINNING ESSAY BY PETER BUTTIGIEG

Bernie Sanders

By Peter Buttigieg
St. Joseph’s High School
South Bend, Indiana

In this new century, there are a daunting number of important issues which are to be confronted if we are to progress as a nation. Each must be addressed thoroughly and energetically. But in order to accomplish the collective goals of our society, we must first address how we deal with issues. We must re-examine the psychological and political climate of American politics. As it stands, our future is at risk due to a troubling tendency towards cynicism among voters and elected officials. The successful resolution of every issue before us depends on the fundamental question of public integrity.

A new attitude has swept American politics. Candidates have discovered that is easier to be elected by not offending anyone rather than by impressing the voters. Politicians are rushing for the center, careful not to stick their necks out on issues. Most Democrats shy away from the word “liberal” like a horrid accusation. Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush uses the centrist rhetoric of “compassionate conservatism” while Pat Buchanan, once considered a mainstream Republican, has been driven off the ideological edge of the G.O.P. Just as film producers shoot different endings and let test audiences select the most pleasing, some candidates run “test platforms” through sample groups to see which is most likely to win before they speak out on major issue. This disturbing trend reveals cynicism, a double-sided problem, which is perhaps, the greatest threat to the continued success of the American political system.

Cynical candidates have developed an ability to outgrow their convictions in order to win power. Cynical citizens have given up on the election process, going to the polls at one of the lowest rates in the democratic world. Such an atmosphere inevitably distances our society from its leadership and is thus a fundamental threat to the principles of democracy. It also calls into question what motivates a run for office – in many cases, apparently, only the desire to occupy it. Fortunately for the political process, there remain a number of committed individuals who are steadfast enough in their beliefs to run for office to benefit their fellow Americans. Such people are willing to eschew political and personal comfort and convenience because they believe they can make a difference. One outstanding and inspiring example of such integrity is the country’s only Independent Congressman, Vermont’s Bernie Sanders.

Make Architecture Great Again

Washington, D.C., is a melange of architecture that makes little sense. Some of it is Roman, (the Supreme Court, the Capitol Building, etc.), some of it is French (namely, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building), and the rest is downright ugly.

The Trump administration wants to change that. A draft of an executive order entitled “Making Federal Buildings Beautiful Again” would make classical Roman and Greek architecture the default for new federal buildings in Washington.

Spearheaded by the National Civic Art Society, the order attempts to restore Washington’s aesthetic and do away with the damage wrought by contemporary architecture, which has “created a built environment that is degraded and dehumanizing,” the society said.

SOCIALISM STRIKES BACK

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

A personal note:  I agree with the author of this article.  I first visited  the Soviet Union in 1982.  Three of the photos I took on the street of the ordinary people were very telling.  One was of an elderly woman selling a few shriveled up cucumbers on the street, another was an elderly woman sweeping the city sidewalk with her broom and the third photo was a truck parked on the street laden with bricks. A man was standing by the side of the truck obviously watching that the three elderly women loaded the bricks quickly and correctly !  In sharp contrast was the magnificent subway system with huge photos of Lenin adorning the walls attesting to the glory of Communism.
On my second trip to what was then called Russia in 1994 after the Berlin Wall had come down and the Soviet Union was dissolved.  My late husband who was working in Moscow for an international company at the time.  He was tied up and robbed in his hotel room at the Metropol  Hotel.  Also,  I had wanted to go back and revisit a wonderful restaurant that I had been to in 1982 but our company security  people told us it was no longer safe to go there as the restaurant  was now controlled by the Russian Mafia.  An American couple that we knew  who were also working in Moscow, bought an apartment and completely gutted and remodeled it. Their apartment was very lovely inside but because of the housing shortage, other apartments in their  building were crowded with many Russian people living in each apartment that had one bathroom.  Trying to put this delicately, let’s just say you had to be very careful where you stepped in the hallways !!!!   Oh, one more  thing, if driving in their chaotic traffic, definitely do not get stopped by the traffic  police for any minor offense,   as they will demand money from you.
On a more positive note, their  museums and arts were world class.  The Hermitage Museum has more Rembrandts than the Metropolitan Museum  in New York !
God forbid that Bernie becomes president !!!  Nancy

Socialism Strikes Back

Before many Sanders voters were born, I saw his ideology in action in the Soviet Union and Britain.

By George Melloan    Mr. Melloan is a former deputy editor of the Journal editorial page. His book about the costs of bogus science will be published in August by Lyons Press.
February 5, 2020

Socialist Bernie Sanders’s emergence as a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination is puzzling to many of us who have experienced socialism. We thought it dead—good riddance—when the Soviet empire collapsed 30 years ago. Our mistake.

One can only assume that the hardships endured by many millions of Russians, Chinese, Africans and Europeans have been forgotten, or never learned, by a new generation of Democratic voters. Mr. Sanders says he is a “democratic socialist,” whereas those unfortunates of the past were ruled by “communists.” He’s right that there are wide differences in degree. But although the postwar British Labour Party was freely elected, it brought Brits a more limited degree of the economic stagnation that afflicted the people of the undemocratic Soviet Union and its satellites.

MAX SINGER ON TRUTH AND MIDEAST PEACE

Sunday, February 2nd, 2020

Evidently, the Palestinians are not familiar with Israel’s history in the Old Testament.  Nancy
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Max Singer on Truth and Mideast Peace

‘Parroting Palestinian falsehoods harms the cause of peace.’

February 1, 2020

From “Refute Palestinian Lies to Promote Mideast Peace” by Max Singer, a founder of the Hudson Institute, The Wall Street Journal, Dec. 7, 2018. Singer died Jan. 23 at 88:

The U.S. has already acted to gain recognition of three key truths that had long been diplomatically ignored: Jerusalem is the capital of Israel; very few of the Palestinians that the U.N. Relief and Works Agency supports are actually refugees; and the U.N. has been unacceptably biased against Israel.

Now the U.S. can tip the political balance toward peace and stability by insisting on two other truths. First, despite widespread use of the term in diplomatic documents and debate, there is no such thing as “occupied Palestinian territory” because there has never been a Palestinian territory to occupy. As some Palestinians point out, they have never had a state of their own. This is far more than a game of semantics. If the land was Palestinian, then Israel could have stolen it. If the land isn’t Palestinian, then Israel couldn’t have stolen it. It’s critical that the U.S. actively combat the falsehood that Israel exists on stolen Palestinian land.

The second falsehood is married to the first. The Palestinians not only claim that all the land is theirs, they also deny any Jewish connection to it. During the failed Camp David talks in 2000, Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat stunned President Clinton by asserting the Jews had no connection to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the place where the first and second Jewish temples stood.

Mr. Clinton may have been surprised, but the Palestinian denial of any historic Jewish connection to the land is nothing new, and it continues. Since the Palestinians know that hardly anyone outside the Arab world who would agree with them, they rarely say it in English. . . .

CIVILIZATION IS HISTORY AT YALE

Thursday, January 30th, 2020

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Civilization Is History at Yale

Great art is too ‘white, straight, European and male,’ so it’ll have to give way to the latest agitprop.

By Roger Kimball  Mr. Kimball is president and publisher of Encounter Books and editor and publisher of the New Criterion.    January 30, 2020

Yale announced last week that it will stop teaching its famous survey course, “Introduction to Art History: Renaissance to the Present.” Taught for decades by Vincent Scully, one of Yale’s most celebrated professors, the course was a riveting introduction to pulse of humanism.

It is being cashiered for all the usual reasons. Its focus is too white, too European, too male, too “problematic,” as Tim Barringer, chairman of the art history department, puts it. Mr. Barringer will substitute a course that challenges such Eurocentrism and promises to be very up-to-date. Mr. Barringer says he’ll introduce a “global” perspective. Naturally, he writes, the course will consider art in relation to “questions of gender, class and ‘race.’ ” (Why the scare quotes around “race”? Is today one of those days when race is only a social construct?) It will also ponder art’s “involvement with Western capitalism.”

Globalism, gender, class, race, capitalism. Has Mr. Barringer neglected any trendy concern? How about the Greta Thunberg gambit? On it! Art’s “relationship with climate change will be a ‘key theme,’ ” the Yale Daily News reports.

The Daily News adds that the removal of “Introduction to Art History” is “the latest response to student uneasiness over an idealized Western ‘canon’—a product of an overwhelmingly white, straight, European and male cadre of artists.”

BERNIE SANDERS EXPOSED FOR BACKING THE IRANIAN HOSTAGE TAKERS IN 1979

Friday, January 24th, 2020

This is why the Democrats are trying to ruin Sander’s chances for  being their nominee.  All of this information on Sander’s past support for the Iranian hostage takers  will be brought out in the election by the Trump campaign and the Democrats will go down in flames.  Go Bernie !!!!    Nancy

When Iran Took Americans Hostage, Bernie Backed Iran’s Defenders

By Ronald Radosh   January 16, 2020
EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:  If Sanders were to become the Democratic presidential nominee, all this will come pouring out in Trump ads on television and social media. Voters  will see TV clips of the American hostages, blindfolded and abused, alongside Sanders as the Trotskyist elector supporting the Iranian kidnappers. Rest assured, Trump will make absolutely sure that it is Sanders’ own past that will bury him and perhaps the Democratic Party.

Bernie Sanders, a top competitor in the Democratic primaries, has attacked Joe Biden for bringing “just a lot of baggage” into the race. But if past views are a major consideration, consider the baggage that Sanders drags into the campaign.

Go back over 40 years, to the start of Iran’s long conflict with the United States. On April 1, 1979, the theocratic Islamic Republic of Iran was proclaimed. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who had returned to Iran from exile to assume command of the revolt, became Supreme Leader in December of that year. His rise was accelerated by the seizure on Nov. 4 of 52 American diplomats and citizens, and citizens of other countries, at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The hostage crisis became the means by which the Ayatollah crushed political opponents in Iran. Dealing with the hostage taking became the overwhelming political crisis for President Jimmy Carter. It lasted 444 days.

Virtually all Americans—Democrats, Republicans and independents—united in support of the hostages and the international call for their freedom. One prominent political figure on the 2020 stage, then almost completely unknown, stood apart by joining a Marxist-Leninist party that not only pledged support for the Iranian theocracy, but also justified the hostage taking by insisting the hostages were all likely CIA agents. Who was that person? It was Bernie Sanders.
