The Ongoing Battle to Protect Critical Substation Infrastructure
EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE: The threats to substations are many, and varied. According to a study by Politico, physical attacks on the power grid are at their highest level since 2012, and utilities reported 60 such attacks on major grid infrastructure (in addition to two cyberattacks) during the first three months of 2023 alone. That’s more than double the number from the same period last year, and the methods of attack are increasing alongside the frequency.
Given the diversity of these threats, experts are now advising that utilities undergo threat assessments based on specific challenges posed by their location and unique vulnerabilities.
You’ve seen them, though they’re not much to look at – gravel patches of dull gray poles and metal boxes strung with wires, coils, and pipes. The U.S. grid consists of around 55,000 substations, high-voltage equipment used for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity across the country. Usually found off to the side of some unassuming rural road or industrial park, we drive by substations each day with little thought, just some dystopian (this is the second use of dystopian in writing in my entire life.) art exhibits lining our commute. But for bad actors intent on creating chaos, substations represent something much more valuable – the perfect target.
One of substation’s primary functions is to (the main roles of substations is to) convert electricity into the correct (different) voltages that can be used by (so it can be transmitted into) our homes and businesses. Without substations, electricity cannot be measured, and voltage levels cannot be switched or regulated because the equipment is specifically designed to handle particular voltages of power. When this happens, the power goes out and cities or regions can shut down. Given its critical importance, you’d assume this infrastructure would be heavily guarded round-the-clock. Nope. Instead, substations are usually just surrounded by a chain-link fence, the security equivalent of protecting a basketball court.

Who needs the Nobel Peace Prize when you can have the Biden War Prize? That’s right, the Biden administration announced this week that it plans to give the Iranian regime another $10 billion in unfrozen assets from Oman, apparently as a small token of appreciation for helped orchestrate a war in the Middle East and targeting US troops in the region at least 56 times, wounding at least 56 US servicemen, many with traumatic brain injury — in just one month! Where does everyone sign up?
The total number of attacks on US troops by the Iranian regime since US President Joe Biden assumed office, is (so far) 139: 83 before March, 56 since. This new $10 billion comes on top of the earlier “closer to $60 billion” it already gave the regime by not enforcing sanctions against it.
- From the Iranian regime’s perspective, annihilating Israel and the Jews would presumably be a major breakthrough, giving them a dominance over the Muslim world, even greater than Saudi Arabia’s.
- The dedicated funds that this new $10 billion will release can now be used to put the finishing touches on the mullahs’ nuclear bomb – to threaten their Sunni neighbors in the Gulf, Europe, and above all, “The Great Satan, the United States. Iran’s plans for cutting “The Great Satan” (and others) down to size are already underway in Cuba and throughout South America. Earlier this month, Israel helped Brazil thwart an attack by the Iran-backed terrorist group Hizballah on Brazil’s Jews.
- Sadly, the $10 billion looks suspiciously like a “pretty please” bribe not to try to drive the US out of the region this year [before the 2024 US election]; instead, wait for next year.

EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE: The U.S. is also making a historic transition from conventional power plants fueled by coal and natural gas to cleaner forms of energy such as wind and solar power. Grid operators across the U.S. have been warning that power-generating capacity is struggling to keep up with demand, and that gaps could lead to rolling blackouts during hot or cold weather extremes.
Everything is bigger in Texas, including its electricity use, which is increasing at historic rates in a sign of what is to come for much of the U.S.
The country’s largest electricity producer and user saw sales grow at five times the national rate for the past decade, roughly like adding Louisiana. A crushing heat wave this summer broke 10 peak demand records for the main Texas grid operator, which narrowly avoided blackouts one hot evening.
Texas is an extreme example with a big population that needs a lot of air conditioning, but it is also at the center of trends pushing electricity use higher in pockets of the country: the reshoring of manufacturing, the growth of power-hungry data centers and a push to electrification.

During a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on Oct. 19, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) grilled Jigar H. Shah, the director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office, over the latter’s appearances at paid events. When asked if he thought it’s fine to attend events where “people who want to get loans from the government are paying to see you,” Mr. Shah was speechless for a moment.

Are they really head-in-the-sand deniers? What exactly is the hard scientific evidence–not political/ideological opinion–that refutes what they are saying?

We Americans have become extremely worried in the last two and a half years because we have suffered a dramatic fall in our standard of living and personal safety. Climate Change Is ‘Killing People and Devastating Communities’ Says U.N. Chief António Guterres
EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE: One must assume that Mr. Guterres is also unaware that far more people die each year from cold weather than from heat.
The United Nations alarmist-in-chief António Guterres called for “drastic steps” Friday to eliminate all fossil fuels in order to curb global warming.
“Climate change is not just a change in the weather. It is changing life on our planet,” Guterres asserted in a Twitter (X) post. “It is killing people and devastating communities.”
The U.N. chief did not share data on who exactly has died from “climate change” or which communities have been “devastated” by it, in accord with his usual practice of rhetoric-heavy, fact-light discourse.
Instead, he cut right to the chase: “To limit global temperature rise, we must phase out coal, oil & gas in a fair & equitable way – and massively boost renewables.”
In a video he embedded in his post, Guterres makes the remarkable claim that “every continent, every region, and every country is feeling the heat.”
That may be true in his native Portugal, but in Greenland, where the average yearly temperature is just over 1°F (-17°C), feeling the heat is a luxury.
Russia, spanning the continents of Asia and Europe, has a still colder annual average of -5.2ºF (-20.7ºC), meaning that below freezing is the norm.
Even in Canada, where the annual average sits at a balmy 20.6°F (-6.4°C), one supposes that an added 1.5ºC would be a welcome (if insufficient) change for the better.
One must assume that Mr. Guterres is also unaware that far more people die each year from cold weather than from heat.

A shadowy nonprofit organization called C40 is pressuring mayors across the globe to implement city-wide “consumption interventions” to restrict or eliminate meat consumption, air travel, owning your own car, and even buying new clothes.
C40 seeks to establish these restrictions by 2030, and 100 cities are already adopting them. Cities in France are limiting air travel, New York City restricts meat intake in its schools and other government facilities, and many cities in the U.S. have ridiculous “low emissions zones.”
Despite its radicalism, C40 is very influential. It is funded by the Clinton Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, the World Bank, and other powerful interests. It collaborates with the World Economic Forum and the United Nations.
