Remember Barack Obama? He’s the president of the United States. As a candidate he promised hope and change. Now he defends the status quo. The fact that the status quo is clearly unsustainable doesn’t deter him. His budget’s endless deficits and rising debt takes us down a perfectly obvious road to ruin. But Obama asks us to close our eyes, pretend not to see, and hope against hope that we don’t need to change.
Thankfully, the Republican party in 2011, under the leadership of Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan, has decided to be serious about governing. But to govern America requires the presidency. The late Jack Kemp helped inspire the last sea change in American politics from the halls of Congress in the late 1970s. But real change required the defeat of incumbent president Jimmy Carter and the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Thus the current interest, and anxiety, among Republicans and conservatives about 2012. (more…)
RYAN-RUBIO TICKET FOR 2012?

Now more than ever?

Three months ago, in this space, I half-jokingly suggested a Ryan-Rubio ticket in 2012:
Having just returned from the e21 and Manhattan Institute-sponsored Conversation with Paul Ryan (very ably conducted by Paul Gigot)–and having seen Marco Rubio speak recently as well, I’ll just say this: Wouldn’t it be easier just to agree now on a Ryan-Rubio ticket, and save everyone an awful lot of time, effort, and money over the next year and a half?
As I subsequently reported, I received many e-mails in response, of which these were representative:
“Excellent, excellent choices! Unbeatable pair! I’m so excited – a reason for hope!”
“All I can say is: YES!!!!!”
A few days later, there arrived at the office a package of a few dozen Ryan-Rubio 2012 campaign buttons, sent by an enthusiast who wanted to do his part. They’ve been sitting on my desk, until I thought to bring them to Fox today, since the two guests on Fox News Sunday were…Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio. I offered one to Ryan to wear on the air, but for some reason he demurred! In any case, watch or read for yourself the Ryan and Rubio interviews, and make up your own mind about them as a possible ticket. All I can say is the buttons went like hotcakes to staff and guests the minute the show ended.

Everyone in Washington knows how to cut spending. The time to start is now.

Our generation’s greatest challenge is an economy that isn’t growing, alongside a national debt that is. If we fail to confront this, our children will be the first Americans ever to inherit a country worse off than the one their parents were given.
Current federal policies make it harder for job creators to start and grow businesses. Taxes on individuals are complicated and set to rise in less than two years. Corporate taxes will soon be the highest in the industrialized world. Federal agencies torment job creators with an endless string of rules and regulations.
On top of all this, we have an unsustainable national debt. Leaders of both parties have grown our government for decades by spending money we didn’t have. To pay for it, they borrowed $4 billion a day, leaving us with today’s $14 trillion debt. Half of that debt is held by foreign investors, mostly China. And there is no plan to stop. In fact, President Obama’s latest budget request spends more than $46 trillion over the next decade. Under this plan, public debt will equal 87% of our economy in less than 10 years. This will scare away job creators and lead to higher taxes, higher interest rates and greater inflation.
Betting on America used to be a sure thing, but job creators see the warning signs that our leaders ignore. Even the world’s largest bond fund, PIMCO, recently dumped its holdings of U.S. debt. (more…)
MARCO RUBIO – A MAN WITH A VERY PROMISING FUTURE
Saturday, November 20th, 2010It Was Rubio’s Tuesday
The most important freshman senator.
Stephen F. Hayes
EXCERPT FROM MARCO RUBIO’S SPEECH: ” I do not believe you have to demonize people in order to win elections. Quite frankly, I think that many of these people in Washington who are making bad policy are generally well intentioned. But I think they have two things wrong: a fundamental misunderstanding of how our economy functions and a fundamental misunderstanding of America’s role in the world. And those two things are what led to these policies.
Number one—The economy functions like this: Jobs are not created by politicians, they are created by people that start businesses or expand existing businesses. And the job of government is to create the environment where doing that becomes easier, not harder. Number two—America’s role in the world is pretty straightforward. The world is safer and it is better when America is the strongest country in the world. (more…)
