U.S. TRYING TO STOP CHINA FROM ACQUIRING KEY PORTS

Sunday, April 2nd, 2023

It is reassuring to know that the U.S. is trying to block China in their quest to own and control major infrastructure  around the world (Belt and Road Plan – www.cfr.org/backgrounder/chinas-massive-belt-and-road-initiative
.  But, will the U.S. be able to effectively stop the Chinese?   Very dangerous times we are in!  Nancy

In Croatia, U.S. Campaigned to Stop Chinese Bid on Key Port

Both the Trump and Biden administrations have worked with allies to limit Beijing’s influence in Europe

April 2, 2023

RIJEKA, Croatia—On Rijeka’s waterfront, vast piles of scrap metal stretch for hundreds of yards, the byproduct of an ongoing construction project to renovate the port in the northern Adriatic Sea.

When a deal to remake the port emerged three years ago, it set off alarm bells in Washington: Three Chinese state-owned companies had won a bid for a 50-year deal to build and operate a modern new ship-container terminal at Rijeka, a deepwater port with easy access to central Europe’s markets.

That news, according to U.S. and Croatian officials, sparked an intense, behind-the-scenes campaign by Washington that used diplomacy, declassified intelligence and other tools to persuade North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally Croatia to keep China out. U.S. officials also quietly backed an alternate offer led by Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S.

U.S. diplomacy, coupled with pressure from the European Union, ultimately helped block Chinese ambitions, people familiar with the events said. The Croatian government canceled the tender without explanation in January 2021, rebid it, and awarded the 2.7 billion euro (about $3 billion) concession to APM Terminals, a unit of Maersk, and ENNA Logic, a Croatian logistics company.

“There was no direct intervention, but certain signals did exist,” Oleg Butkovic, Croatia’s transportation minister, said in an interview in the capital, Zagreb. “It’s a very sensitive issue.”

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON – ARE WE THE BYZANTINES?

Friday, March 17th, 2023

Is history repeating itself ?  It certainly seems that it is.
   Nancy

Are we the Byzantines?

Christendom had cannibalized itself. Western Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy fought endlessly. Westerners often hated each other more than they did their common enemy.

In the final days of Constantinople, almost no help was sent from Western Europe to the besieged city.

In fact 250 years earlier, the Western Franks of the Fourth Crusade had detoured from the Holy Land to storm the supposedly allied Christian City of Constantinople. Then they ransacked it and hijacked the Byzantine Empire for a half-century. Constantinople never quite recovered.

The 14 th-century Black Plague killed tens of thousands of Byzantines and scared thousands more into moving out of the cramped city.

But the aging and dying empire battled more than the challenges of internal divisions, or an unforeseen but deadly pandemic and the empire’s disastrous responses to it.

The last generations of Byzantines had inherited a global reputation and standard of living that they themselves no longer earned.

They neglected their former civic values and fought endless battles over obscure religious texts, doctrines, and vocabulary.

They did not expand their anemic army and navy. They did not reunite their scattered Greek-speaking empire. They did not properly maintain their once life-giving walls.

Instead of earning money through their accustomed nonstop trade, they inflated their currency and were forced to melt down the city’s inherited gold and silver fixtures.

The once canny and shrewd Byzantines grew smug and naive. Childlessness became common. Most now preferred to live outside of what had become a half-empty, often dirty, and poorly maintained city.

Meanwhile they underestimated the growing power of the Ottomans who systematically pruned away their empire. By the mid-15th century, Islamic armies were ready to exploit fatal Byzantine weaknesses.

The Sultan Mehmed II grandly announced the Ottomans were now the real, the only world power. Ascendant Ottoman armies would eventually move on to the very gates of Vienna in an effort to rule all the lands of the ancient Roman empire.

We should take heed from the last generations of the Byzantines.

Nowhere is it foreordained that America has a birthright to remain the world’s preeminent civilization.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE PUSH FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2023

The negatives for EV’s just keep piling up. The possibility  that forces to be would be able to curtail our movements by shutting down or limiting our access to the electric grid just never occurred to me ! Sounds crazy, I know, but look how easy it was to lock down our  economy and severely limit our activities for two years just by using fear.     Nancy
EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:

This coerced conversion plan is clearly a disaster if the goal is to provide the American people a better way to travel.  But what if the goal is something other than converting to a “better mousetrap?” Could it be that a coalition of globalists, environmental fundamentalists, and totalitarian-leaning politicians are conspiring to limit the freedom of Americans and control their ability to move about? After all, it is a lot easier to shut down, curtail, or monitor a centrally managed electric grid than it is to close 115,000 gas stations. Americans might want to wake up and think about the risks of buying into the virtue-signaling conversion to EVs.  The way of life that we have enjoyed for over a century may very well be at stake.
February 27, 2023

What’s behind the push for electric vehicles?

The modern internal combustion engine is an engineering marvel.  These power plants run incredibly clean.  According to the EPA, overall gasoline car tailpipe emissions are now about 98–99% less than for cars in the 1960s.  Many current gas-powered cars get well over 35 miles per gallon and have highway ranges of over 500 miles.  Refueling takes five minutes, and there are 115,000 gasoline stations in the U.S.

So why the huge push by the U.S. government to convert to electric vehicles?  It is curious, given that E.V.s are actually inferior to gas vehicles for most uses.  (Perhaps a case could be made for hybrid vehicles in short-range, high-density urban settings.)  Also, beyond vehicle performance, there are other serious negative side-effects of this E.V. conversion.  To recap, here are some of the problems with widespread conversion to E.V.s:

Environmental Damage — Several studies have shown that when factoring in the production process and electricity generation needed to charge the batteries, E.V. conversion can be more damaging to the environment that gas vehicles.

Rare Earth Mineral Mining Problems — The mining of rare earth minerals such as lithium and cobalt for E.V. batteries causes a great deal of environmental damage.  Much of this is done in foreign counties that don’t have good environmental oversight.  Furthermore, to meet the international goal of two billion E.V.s by 2050 would require triple the amount of annual lithium currently mined for all purposes.  Disposal of spent batteries can have toxic environmental effects, and mitigation of this issue hasn’t been thought through or planned.

Victor Davis Hanson: The Chinese Spy Balloon, Orwellian Newspeak, and the Top-Down Revolution Engulfing America

American Thought Leaders

AMERICAN THOUGHT LEADERS

JAN JEKIELEK

“I’m just bewildered that these two evil regimes are so asymmetrically treated as we saw with the balloon … Had Russia done that, we would have shot that down the moment it got near the Aleutians,” says Victor Davis Hanson, a classicist, military historian, and author of a number of best-selling books, including most recently “The Dying Citizen.”

In this broad-ranging interview, we discuss the Chinese spy balloon, Orwellian newspeak, and the woke revolution he sees gripping America.

“When they were trapped about the balloon, the new Soviet talking point came: ‘Balloons came in during Trump. Trump ignored them. Trump ignored balloons.’ And that talking point, it was sort of like the old Roman maxim that a lie travels around the world before the truth can catch up. And that’s how they operate.”

Unlike the protests of the 1960s, this current woke revolution “was staged from the top,” Hanson says. “The left was not marching on the Pentagon. The left was not marching on the campus administrator. The left was not marching on Anaconda Copper or I.T.T. as they had been. They were inside the boardroom. They were inside the president’s office. They were inside the FBI. They were inside the CIA. They were inside the Pentagon.”

Ultimately, we are witnessing the unraveling of Western civilization, Hanson says.

“It’s actually an attack on meritocracy, and the whole empirical system of hiring the most qualified better person for the stability and success of society … Where this ultimately goes … it means that, as you see in Cuba or Venezuela or Colombia, very successful societies start to break down and they can’t deliver the essentials of life because they have a commissariat, a commissar system of ideology trumping empiricism,” Hanson says.

BIDEN BOWS TO BLACKMAIL ON MIGRANTS

Tuesday, January 10th, 2023

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Biden Bows to Blackmail on Migrants

The administration rewards Venezuelan trafficking with 30,000 new visas.

Jan. 8, 2023

The Cuban military dictatorship has unleashed three destabilizing rafter crises since taking power in 1959. They occurred in 1965, 1980 and 1994-95, all years when a Democrat was in the White House. During the Obama administration, more than 120,000 Cuban migrants found their way to U.S. ports of entry from 2014-16, mainly via Central America.

There was no attempt by Fidel Castro to flood American shores with desperate balseros during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush despite their hard-line policies against Cuba. Donald Trump faced caravans arriving at the southern border starting in 2018 but by the end of 2019, the numbers of migrant “encounters” by U.S. Customs and Border Protection had dropped precipitously.

This partisan dichotomy is worth noting in light of the human train-wreck at the southern U.S. border since President Biden took office. Is the migrant crisis merely a spontaneous flood of huddled masses yearning to breathe free, or is it an organized assault on U.S. law and order similar to Castro pranks of old?

Zelensky signs controversial law expanding government power to regulate media

By Brad Dress  January 1, 2023

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law a controversial statute expanding the government’s power to regulate media groups and journalists in the country.

Zelensky signed the legislation on Thursday over the objections of media unions and press freedom organizations that warned it will have a chilling effect on free speech.

Under the new law, the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council, whose members are appointed by the president’s administration and by members of parliament, will have broader authority over Ukrainian media organizations and journalists.

The regulatory agency can effectively shut down news sites that aren’t registered, according to The Kyiv Independent.

Protests in Shanghai and Beijing as Anger Over China’s COVID Curbs Mounts

November 27, 2022
Hundreds of demonstrators and police clashed in Shanghai on Sunday night as protests over China’s stringent COVID restrictions flared for a third day and spread to several cities in the wake of a deadly fire in the country’s far west. The wave of civil disobedience is unprecedented in mainland China since President Xi Jinping assumed power a decade ago, as frustration mounts over his signature zero-COVID policy nearly three years into the pandemic. The COVID measures are also exacting a heavy toll on the world’s second-largest economy.

“I’m here because I love my country, but I don’t love my government … I want to be able to go out freely, but I can’t. Our COVID-19 policy is a game and is not based on science or reality,” said a protester in the financial hub named Shaun Xiao.

Protesters also took to the streets in the cities of Wuhan and Chengdu on Sunday, while students on numerous university campuses around China gathered to demonstrate over the weekend.

WEF’s Klaus Schwab Says China Will Be a ‘Role Model’ in the ‘Systemic Transformation’ of the World

by

KURT ZINDULKA

24 Nov 2022

The World Economic Forum’s Klaus Schwab proclaimed that Communist China will likely serve as a “role model” for many countries as the global community embarks upon a “systemic transformation of the world”.

In an interview with the Chinese state-run television network CGTN, World Economic Forum (WEF) chairman and founder Klaus Schwab heaped praise on the communist government in Beijing for being a leading figure in his vision of a Great Reset of capitalism to usher in the “world of tomorrow”.

“I respect China’s achievements, which are tremendous over the last over 40 years, I think it’s a role model for many countries,” the Davos chief said, adding that while he believes countries should be able to choose the system they prefer to live under, the “Chinese model is certainly a very attractive model for quite a number of countries.”
