Obama’s Successful Foreign Failure

The president may look incompetent on Syria. But his behavior fits his strategy to weaken America abroad.

  • NORMAN PODHORETZMr. Podhoretz was the editor of Commentary from 1960-95. His most recent book is “Why Are Jews Liberals?” (Doubleday, 2009).

It is entirely understandable that Barack Obama’s way of dealing with Syria in recent weeks should have elicited responses ranging from puzzlement to disgust. Even members of his own party are despairingly echoing in private the public denunciations of him as “incompetent,” “bungling,” “feckless,” “amateurish” and “in over his head” coming from his political opponents on the right.

For how else to characterize a president who declares war against what he calls a great evil demanding immediate extirpation and in the next breath announces that he will postpone taking action for at least 10 days—and then goes off to play golf before embarking on a trip to another part of the world? As if this were not enough, he also assures the perpetrator of that great evil that the military action he will eventually take will last a very short time and will do hardly any damage. Unless, that is, he fails to get the unnecessary permission he has sought from Congress, in which case (according to an indiscreet member of his own staff) he might not take any military action after all.image

HOW I LEARNED ABOUT THE CHICAGO WAY

IRS scandal a reminder of how I learned about The Chicago Way

John Kass

May 19, 2013

EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:  This was Chicago. And for a business owner to get involved meant one thing: It would cost you money and somebody from government could destroy you.

The Internal Revenue Service scandal now devouring the Obama administration — the outrageous use of the federal taxing authority to target tea party and other conservatives — certainly makes for meaty partisan politics.

But this scandal is about more than partisanship. It’s bigger than whether the Republicans win or the Democrats lose.

It’s even bigger than President Barack Obama. Yes, bigger than Obama.

It is opening American eyes to the fundamental relationship between free people and those who govern them. This one is about the Republic and whether we can keep it.

And it started me thinking of years ago, of my father and my uncle in Chicago and how government muscle really works.

Because if you want to understand The Chicago Way of things in Washington these days, with the guys from Chicago in charge of the White House and the federal leviathan, there’s one place you start:

You start in Chicago.

My father and uncle ran a small business, a supermarket on the South Side. Uncle George worked in the front, my father in the butcher shop in the back. My uncle had been a teacher. My father had plowed his fields with a mule.

They were immigrants who came here from Greece with nothing in their pockets but a determination to work, and the belief that here, in America, no other power could roll in with tanks and put their boots on the necks of their children.

My father and uncle, like the rest of the family, valued education and books and free political debate. And so at large extended family Sundays, we’d all sit around the dinner table, many uncles and aunts and cousins, young and old.

There were conservatives and socialists, Roosevelt Democrats and Reagan Republicans and a few bewildered, equivocal moderates in between, everyone squabbling, laughing, telling stories. (more…)

OBAMACARE PENALTY ON HOSPITALS

An ObamaCare Penalty on Hospitals

This approach to reducing Medicare patient readmissions will have unintended consequences.

Under the Affordable Care Act’s Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, hospitals that readmit “excessive” numbers of Medicare patients within 30 days of discharge now face significant penalties. The maximum penalty is 1% of a hospital’s Medicare reimbursement, but that will increase to 3% in 2015.

That may not sound like a lot, but for hospitals already struggling financially—especially those serving the poor—losing 1%-3% of their Medicare reimbursements could put them out of business. While the Affordable Care Act addresses important gaps in health care and insurance, this regulation is one of its major failings.

Giving hospitals an incentive to improve the quality of care and reduce the rehospitalization of patients, thereby lowering Medicare costs, is a worthy goal. But the current approach flies in the face of the best medical science and jeopardizes the health of patients and the bottom line of hospitals in three important ways:

Research shows that most readmissions can’t be prevented.

Readmissions are often unavoidable consequence of life-threatening complications that can appear after discharge from the hospital. In 2011, research at the University of Toronto revealed that only about 25% of all readmissions are preventable. (more…)

ICE MANUAL: TAXPAYERS PAY FOR ILLEGAL’S PREGNANCY SERVICES, AND TRANSGENDER THERAPY

ICE Manual: Taxpayers Pick Up Tab for

Abortions, Transgender Therapy for

Illegals

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 By: Newsmax Wires

U.S. immigration officials are under standing orders to provide abortion services for detained illegal aliens in some circumstances and hormone therapy to those who say they are transgendered.

The orders to do so are included in the “2011 Operations Manual ICE Performance-Based National Detention Standards” for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security.

Detention facilities are required to provide female detainees with “pregnancy services including routine or specialized prenatal care, postpartum follow-up, lactation services and abortion services,” the manual dictates.

The government will pay for an abortion in cases of rape or incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger, according to the manual. In other cases, the female detainee who wants to halt a pregnancy must pay for the abortion, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement will cover transportation costs to and from the abortion clinic.

The guidelines, which CNSNews.com highlighted in a report today, require a specially trained officer to interview aliens within 12 hours of detention.

“Transgender detainees who were already receiving hormone therapy when taken into ICE custody shall have continued access,” according to the regulations. “All transgender detainees shall have access to mental health care, and other transgender-related health care and medication based on medical need. Treatment shall follow accepted guidelines regarding medically necessary transition-related care.”
