Harvard Columnist Warns University Free Speech Threatens Liberalism

February 25, 2014

One of the most important freedoms sought by our Founding Fathers was the right to free speech.  Under the British monarchy, they were not allowed to criticize or say anything against the King or British government.  To do so could mean imprisonment or worse.  This is what prompted them to make free speech the first item guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

Over the past several years, we’ve seen a growing number of attempts to limit free speech by the Obama administration.  Barack Obama has used the IRS to target his political enemies in such way as to penalize them for exercising their rights of free speech.  He has the NSA spying on our emails, phone calls and text messages, looking for things to use against us.  He has used the courts to quell the free speech and the exercise of religion of Christians in their business dealings and messages from the pulpit.

Now, a columnist for the Harvard Crimson, the university’s campus newspaper is telling school officials that they need to start abolishing free speech and research that goes against the school’s liberal ideology.  Sandra Korn, a senior wrote The Doctrine of Academic Freedom: Let’s give up on academic freedom in favor of justice, in which she states:

“Yet the liberal obsession with ‘academic freedom’ seems a bit misplaced to me. After all, no one ever has ‘full freedom’ in research and publication. Which research proposals receive funding and what papers are accepted for publication are always contingent on political priorities. The words used to articulate a research question can have implications for its outcome. No academic question is ever ‘free’ from political realities. If our university community opposes racism, sexism, and heterosexism, why should we put up with research that counters our goals simply in the name of ‘academic freedom’”?

“Instead, I would like to propose a more rigorous standard: one of ‘academic justice.’ When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.”

The examples she gives in her articles demonstrates her view that if anything differs from the liberal, pro-feminist, pro-homosexual and anti-traditional family values of the majority of academics and students on the Harvard campus, they should not be allowed.  If someone wanted to do research to determine the positive aspects of heterosexual parent families over homosexual parents, that research should not be allowed to take place on the Harvard campus and those involved with the research be removed from the school.

Please take note that Barack Obama is a Harvard alumnus and has been exhibiting the same philosophy as Korn is pushing in her article.  This is typical liberal philosophy in that they never want to allow anyone in opposition to them to have the same liberties and rights as they do.  Their goal is to suppress the rights and freedoms of conservatives, Christians and anyone who supports traditional family values.

While many parents want their child to have a Harvard education, they need to ask themselves if they really want their son or daughter to be brainwashed by this kind of liberal extremism.  At what price is a Harvard education worth?  Is it worth more than all sense of decency, fairness and honor?  Is it worth having your child learn to disregard the basic freedoms that hundreds of thousands of Americans have died for?  I would hope not!
