As you are aware, devastating storms hit North Carolina last weekend causing a great degree of damage across a
large part of the central and eastern regions of our state. As I have traveled to many of the areas most affected by Saturday’s storms, I have been shocked by some of the destruction I have witnessed. However, I remain in awe of the resilient spirit and work ethic of North Carolinians. Communities have come together to help in clean-up and recovery efforts, and it is in trying times like these that we see the best of the human spirit shine through. Brooke’s and my thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and families of all those affected by these storms. My staff and I are committed to working with residents and local officials to ensure that federal assets are deployed quickly and efficiently to aid in the recovery of affected communities.
As a result of the devastation, the President has issued a
major disaster declaration prompting the release of federal aid to help individuals and communities recover from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred on Saturday. For more information on this declaration and how to seek federal assistance,
follow this link. You can also visit
my website for more information.
Have a joyous holiday weekend.
Sincerely,
U.S. Senator Richard Burr

Before getting into what we worked on in Washington this week, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Elizabeth Edwards. She was a passionate advocate for issues she believed in and a caring and loving mother. Her legacy should serve as an inspiration to all of us. Although her life was not without tragedy and adversity, through it all she fought for her family and faced every challenge with courage, poise, and grace. Brooke’s and my thoughts and prayers are with her entire family.
Many of you have called or written my office to express your opinion on the DREAM Act. This is legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for a large number of illegal immigrants, and it was defeated in the Senate this week. The DREAM Act would reward those who have broken our immigration laws with citizenship and tuition benefits. This legislation is fraught with enforcement problems and, counter to what many people think, it is not limited to children. I do not believe it is appropriate to reward those who are in this country illegally at the expense of those who have followed the rules.
Last night, we received more information about the tax extension proposal put forth by President Obama. As I have said previously, I support a permanent extension of the current tax rates for everyone. A tax increase is the last thing American families, and our economy, need. I am currently reviewing the details of this proposal, and I will keep you informed about what it means for you and your family in the days to come. (more…) |

We are in the final stretch of the 111th Congress. Topping the list of unfinished items are bills funding operations of the federal government for the rest of the year and legislation that will ensure American families and small businesses do not face large tax increases on January 1.
The Majority has yet to set a schedule for the remaining time in this Congress, and major issues like funding the government and preventing tax increases on all Americans have not been addressed. In the absence of a clear agenda from the Majority Leader, on Tuesday, Senate Republicans sent a letter to Senator Reid urging him to make these issues the top priorities between now and the time the Senate adjourns. It’s time that the Majority bring the most critical legislation to the Senate floor for debate and a vote so we can get to work on the myriad of pressing issues on which Americans desperately need action taken. Read the letter we sent to Majority Leader in its entirety here.
One issue the Senate did vote on this week was the food safety bill. Our nation’s food safety system was designed over a century ago and was appropriate for a world in which most of our food was grown and processed domestically. Recent outbreaks of food-borne illness and nationwide recalls of contaminated food from both domestic and foreign sources highlight the need to modernize and strengthen our food safety system. This bill improves our capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to food-borne outbreaks and illnesses and increases safety standards on food imported from other countries. I joined a bipartisan group of Senators to help shape the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act so that I could be sure it worked for North Carolina, improved the safety of our food supply, and included protections for small farms and producers from onerous regulation. To read a summary and full text of the bill click here.
I have heard from many North Carolinians concerned that the bill will grant the FDA broader authority to regulate small, family farms. This is simply not true. The fact of the matter is if farms weren’t required to register with the FDA prior to this bill, they will not have to register as a result of this bill. I encourage you to visit this page on my website that addresses many of these areas of concern and sets the record straight on what this bill means for farms and businesses. (more…)

Prior to updating you on my travels in North Carolina and other items of interest, I regret to inform you that this will be my last newsletter for two months. Under Senate rules, Senators are not allowed to send out newsletters during the 60-day period prior to an election. I encourage you to stay up to date with what is going on in Washington by visiting my website. As always, you may contact me about issues in Washington via email or call my Washington office at (202) 224-3154 with any questions or thoughts you would like to share with me. While the Senate continued its recess this week, I drove across the state meeting with North Carolinians, including business owners and employees. North Carolina continues to be a welcome home for manufacturers of a variety of goods and technologies. In Mecklenburg county, I met with a manufacturer of commercial products for colleges and schools and an innovative company that serves the energy and agriculture industries. I also visited a company that specializes in designer of energy-efficient lighting in Vance County and a locally owned and operated farm in Granville County. (more…)

The last two weeks traveling around North Carolina have been busy, but very informative. Last week, I traveled throughout eastern and central North Carolina visiting Carteret, Cumberland, Wayne, Guilford, Lenoir, Craven, Wake, and Orange counties, speaking with small business owners, touring health care centers, and I even had the opportunity to visit with our brave men and women in uniform at Cherry Point. This week I made visits to Durham, Catawba, Lincoln, and Gaston counties. Input from entrepreneurs and employees has been vital to my efforts in Washington. These conversations are critical for making democracy work, and what I have taken away from these meetings is that we must pursue fiscally responsible and less burdensome policies to encourage job creation and economic growth in our state and across the country. Visiting health care facilities allows me to speak directly with doctors, nurses and other medical professionals about our nation’s health care system. (more…)

Senator Burr speaks not as a candidate for reelection but as an American. He talks about our country, why it was formed and about our freedoms and our liberties.
