About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in “Operation Market Garden,” battles to liberate Holland in the fall and winter of 1944.
Every one of the men buried in the cemetery–as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries–has been adopted by a Dutch family who mind the grave, decorate it, and keep alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted. It is even the custom to keep a portrait of “their” American soldier in a place of honor in their home.
Annually, on “Liberation Day,” memorial services are held for “the men who died to liberate Holland.” The day concludes with a concert. The final piece is always “Il Silenzio,” a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland’s liberation. It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since.
The year is 2014, the soloist is a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by André Rieu and his orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands). This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer Nino Rossi.

I first sent this video, Spy In The Hanoi Hilton, out in 2017 and feel that it is so important that it needs to be sent out again. It is a true story that was Top Secret for 42 years and was released in 2015 by the Smithsonian Channel. Sadly, Colonel (Ret) Bernard L. Talley, a dear old friend who was a POW in the Hanoi Hilton, who sent me this video, died last year on February 21, 2022. Nancy

Talley, a US Air Force Pilot and a Vietnam POW for 6 1/2 years for sharing with us this extraordinarily emotional story of James Stockdale, a fellow prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton. This very successful high level espionage operation was kept top secret all these past 42 years so that the technique could be used by future POW’s. This operation was just declassified this year and the movie was produced by the Smithsonian Channel. Please be aware that there are scenes of torture in this movie that are very difficult to watch. Every day we’re being bombarded by new political tactics, hidden enemies, and false friends, right? Nope, there’s not much happening these days that we haven’t been warned about, as the attached video shows. This 1966 speech could have been given yesterday, with the figures adjusted for inflation, and it would have made perfect sense.
Let me set the stage. The 1954 Brown V Board of Election case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for students of different races to be unconstitutional, was decided in the Spring of my sophomore year in high school. We integrated our high school the next fall. I entered the Navy in 1960. My starting salary for the year was $4,800. One of my first goals was to get to $10,000 a year. Two years after that, I was patrolling in a submarine three miles off the coast of North Vietnam. That year, the Supreme Court banned prayer in schools. Two years later Ronald Reagan came on the political stage with his “Time for Choosing” introduction of presidential candidate Barry Goldwater at the 1964 Republican National Convention, the same year Lyndon B. Johnson announced his Great Society program as the cornerstone of his domestic policy.
What do all these events have to do with today? I’ll let you listen to the Great Communicator explain. After you listen, ask yourself if we’ve learned anything from history.
