Fleeing California

Why are millions of people leaving California and moving to other states? What do those states have that California doesn’t? PragerU’s first mini documentary explores the root causes of this mass exodus from the Golden State. “Fleeing California,” featuring PragerU’s own Will Witt, sheds light on one of the most significant but underreported stories of our time.

THE ROOTS OF OUR PARTISAN DIVIDE

The Roots of Our Partisan Divide

February 2020  • Volume 49, Number 2 • Christopher Caldwell

Christopher Caldwell
Senior Fellow, The Claremont Institute and Author, The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties

Christopher Caldwell is a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, a contributing editor at the Claremont Review of Books, and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. A graduate of Harvard College, he has been a senior editor at the Weekly Standard and a columnist for the Financial Times. He is the author of Reflections on the Revolution in Europe: Immigration, Islam, and the West and The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties.

The following is adapted from a talk delivered on January 28, 2020, at Hillsdale College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C., as part of the AWC Family Foundation lecture series.

EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:  And that’s our current party system: the bigots versus the totalitarians.

American society today is divided by party and by ideology in a way it has perhaps not been since the Civil War. I have just published a book that, among other things, suggests why this is. It is called The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties. It runs from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the election of Donald J. Trump. You can get a good idea of the drift of the narrative from its chapter titles: 1963, Race, Sex, War, Debt, Diversity, Winners, and Losers.

I can end part of the suspense right now—Democrats are the winners. Their party won the 1960s—they gained money, power, and prestige. The GOP is the party of the people who lost those things.

One of the strands of this story involves the Vietnam War. The antiquated way the Army was mustered in the 1960s wound up creating a class system. What I’m referring to here is the so-called student deferment. In the old days, university-level education was rare. At the start of the First World War, only one in 30 American men was in a college or university, so student deferments were not culturally significant. By the time of Vietnam, almost half of American men were in a college or university, and student deferment remained in effect until well into the war. So if you were rich enough to study art history, you went to Woodstock and made love. If you worked in a garage, you went to Da Nang and made war. This produced a class division that many of the college-educated mistook for a moral division, particularly once we lost the war. The rich saw themselves as having avoided service in Vietnam not because they were more privileged or—heaven forbid—less brave, but because they were more decent.

ICON LECTURE WILL TAKE ON PROGRESSIVE AGENDA ROADMAP – MARCH 17, 2020, CHAPEL HILL, NC

Friday, March 6th, 2020

ICON Lecture will take on ‘progressive agenda roadmap’

By A.P. Dillon   March 5, 2020
For those interested in hearing more, Michel’s ICON Lecture will take place on March 17. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.iconlectureseries.com/.

CHAPEL HILL — A lecture on government spending, which highlights the high cost of progressive programs, will be taking place next month as part of the ICON Lecture series.

Adam Michel, a senior policy analyst on tax and debt with the Heritage Foundation, will be giving a talk titled “The progressive roadmap to soak the middle class.”

The Heritage Foundation is a conservative D.C. think tank that advocates for limited government, free-market economics and expanded individual opportunity.

The lecture comes along just as socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has gained steam towards becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee

“The progressive agenda, as it is articulated by any of the prominent Democrats and some on the left — taken in whole or in segments — is an incredible departure from fiscal sanity,” Michel told NSJ.

“It is arithmetically impossible to fund the progressive agenda with taxes on the rich alone,” said Michel.

Sanders’ recent publication of a fact sheet on how he plans to fund his agenda items is largely a list of steep tax increases. Michel saw this coming and warns that taxes on the rich will not be nearly enough to pay for Sanders’ wish list.

“If you were to confiscate every dollar earned by every taxpayer with incomes over $200,000 a year, you would only pay for about half of what is being promised by the progressive, left agenda,” said Michel.

Michel warns that if corrective actions aren’t taken, government expenditures will require much larger tax increases on middle-class Americans and even higher taxes on a much larger number of taxpayers.

BLOOMBERG SELLS ‘SUSTAINABILITY,’ BUT BUYER BEWARE

Wednesday, March 4th, 2020

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Bloomberg Sells ‘Sustainability,’ but Buyer Beware

Virtue-signaling corporate standards may be better for financial firms than they are for investors.

By Allysia Finley Ms. Finley is a member of the Journal’s editorial board.  March 2, 2020

EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:Yet Mr. Bloomberg’s ultimate goal is to encode his standards in federal regulation. In his campaign proposal for financial reform, he says he’d urge the Securities and Exchange Commission to adopt a rule “requiring companies to publish information on the racial and gender composition of their boards, senior executives, hiring, pay and procurement,” as well as “climate risks.” If such a rule were adopted, companies could get sued even for unintentionally misreporting information. Trial lawyers stand to make out big.

Liberals like to say that sustainability is good for business—but mainly for those promoting it.

Michael Bloomberg became one of the world’s richest men by creating a financial software and data-analytics business to assist investors. He has since used his wealth to promote progressive causes. Now he’s standing behind a nonprofit financial venture that helps others cash in on liberal corporate virtue. Its name is the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board.

Mr. Bloomberg bankrolled the outfit, which was founded in 2011, to impose his enlightened political and cultural values on American corporations. SASB drew more attention in January when BlackRockCEO Larry Fink threatened to use his firm’s massive ownership stakes to oppose corporate managers who fail to follow the board’s standards.

SASB is modeled on the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which governs how businesses report financial information. It has a nine-member board that sets guidelines on the kinds of “sustainability” information corporations should disclose to investors. This information is supposed to be “material” to a company’s long-term financial performance.

Materiality is essentially a progressive term of art. SASB’s standards vary across 77 industries based on what its “stakeholders”—academics, attorneys, auditors, asset managers and businesses—consider important. Greenhouse-gas emissions are “material” to food and beverage companies but not to those that make consumer goods. Safeguarding customer welfare is important for health insurers though oddly not for airlines or banks.

CHARLIE KIRK’S NEW BOOK – ‘THE MAGA DOCTRINE:  THE ONLY IDEAS THAT WILL WIN THE FUTURE’

The MAGA Doctrine: The Only Ideas That Will Win the Future Hardcover – March 3, 2020

by Charlie Kirk  (Author)    BOOK REVIEW

The movement that brought Donald Trump to the White House has better ideas than the old right or the new left. It’s time that the rest of America started listening.

The Tea Party began as a protest for patriots who feared Big Government. President Trump has become a hero for patriots who are against Big Everything.

Fed up with Silicon Valley, the media, liberal higher education, the military-industrial complex, Twitter mobs, swamp monsters, Big Pharma, out-of-control prosecutors, and gun-grabbing fascists, ordinary Americans miss the days when America cared about rule of the people, by the people, and for the people. Remember when you didn’t feel bombarded on all sides by coastal billionaires and their government stooges? The MAGA Doctrine urges an overdue restoration of self-rule by a populace long taken for granted by its rulers.

Turning Point USA founder and social media superstar Charlie Kirk explains once and for all why a New York real estate magnate found an audience among young conservatives all over the country. Trump and his allies are working to protect all the small things that both parties dismissed: local businesses, families, churches, and the rights of the individual. Kirk explains why it took a reality TV superstar to see past the sclerotic and power-hungry institutions, from the United Nations and Google to Harvard and Viacom, working to crush real America. The Trump Doctrine is all about giving you a say in the future of America and a hand in making it happen.

As the mainstream media keep churning out lies about the “real reasons” behind the new conservative agenda, Charlie Kirk’s The MAGA Doctrine is a powerful reminder of the true narrative of freedom and greatness that swept Donald Trump to the presidency.

THE REAL CUBA IS A LAND OF EXTREME DEPRIVATION

Saturday, February 29th, 2020

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

The Real Cuba Is a Land of Extreme Deprivation

Families were overjoyed when my church group brought children’s Tylenol and cheap reading glasses.

By Andy Laperriere  Mr. Laperriere is a partner at Cornerstone Macro
.  February 28, 2020

I’ve been to Cuba twice with my church, which has been organizing trips for almost 20 years. It’s astonishing some people still cling to a romanticized version of Cuban life under communism. It bears no resemblance to reality.

On these visits, in 2006 and 2007, my fellow travelers and I brought two suitcases, one for our clothes and another for the things we gave away to Cuban churches and our translators. We loaded up on basic medications, especially prenatal vitamins and children’s Tylenol, which Cuban children would otherwise go without.

We bought dozens of pairs of inexpensive reading glasses—the kind Americans can find at the pharmacy for a couple of dollars. Older Cubans sometimes cried when I gave them these glasses, which restored their ability to read.

I can’t say I conducted a study of the Cuban health-care system, but I’ll go out on limb and suggest that people who don’t have children’s Tylenol and cheap reading glasses probably aren’t getting world-class medical care.

Another striking feature of Cuba is the pervasive idleness. Everywhere you look, people are standing around. They aren’t working, because they get paid almost nothing. The old Soviet joke “They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work” sums it up. Most people have informal jobs to supplement their incomes, but this is still strictly limited by the government and thus kept underground.

SOCIALIZED MEDICINE KILLED PRINCESS DIANNA, SURGEON TELLS CPAC

Saturday, February 29th, 2020

Socialized Medicine Killed Princess Diana, Surgeon Tells CPAC

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD — Congressman Steve Scalise introduced a panel discussion called  “Prescription for Failure: The Ills of Socialized Medicine” at CPAC on Thursday. He established what was at stake in 2020: “2020 will be a contrast election,” he said, between Trump’s freedom agenda or socialism.

“You don’t want socialism, you surely don’t want socialized medicine,” he said. “Tens of thousands of Canadians come to America for life-saving treatment. Do you see Americans going to Canada for life-saving treatment?” he asked rhetorically.

“Healthcare is only one example of what’s at stake in this election,” he said, before concluding that individual freedom will win out in 2020 and predicted that Republicans will keep the Senate and win back the House.

Author Dr. David Schneider, an orthopedic surgeon from Colorado, explained how with socialized medicine, wait times for care “are disastrous.” In Canada, the wait time to see a specialist is two years, and then another two years to get the procedure.

“People in this country would go crazy if you were told you had to wait four months,” he said.

Then he explained how Princess Diana would be alive today, if not for socialized medicine. “Princess Diana was in the car accident in France,” he explained. “They actually don’t have any trauma specialists in France.”

“For the first hour after that accident, she was still in that tunnel,” he continued. “And after an hour, they took her to a nearby hospital and she was alive for another three hours and they couldn’t control the bleeding from her pulmonary artery.”

Schneider explained that “there were no trauma-trained people there.”

He continued, “I really believe, knowing what I know about her care and comparing it to what Congressman Scalise had, Princess Diana would have lived had that accident happened here in America.”

Former Trump deputy national security adviser KT McFarland discusses her new book which details her treatment by FBI agents taking part in the Mueller probe.

Revolution: Trump, Washington and “We the People” Hardcover – February 25, 2020    by KT McFarland

When Trump’s first Deputy National Security Advisor left Washington, she disappeared from sight. Now former government official and political commentator KT McFarland returns with tenacity, resolve, and the truth about the Trump Administration and those seeking to destroy it.

For decades, KT McFarland has been one of the country’s most prominent conservative foreign policy experts. She was part of the Trump Revolution from the beginning. As Trump’s first Deputy National Security Advisor, she had a seat at the table for everything: Trump’s unconventional campaign and upset victory; his throw-out-the-rule-book Trump Tower Transition; the chaotic first months in the West Wing; the unusual events surrounding General Flynn’s firing; and the sprawling Mueller investigation.

NIKKI HALEY – CAPITALISM VERSUS SOCIALISM

Thursday, February 27th, 2020

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

This Is No Time to Go Wobbly on Capitalism

As Democrats embrace outright socialism, some CEOs and Republicans call for unwise compromises.

By Nikki Haley    Ms. Haley served as governor of South Carolina, 2011-17, and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, 2017-18. This op-ed is adapted from a speech she delivered Wednesday to the Hudson Institute. February 26, 2020

There’s an important debate happening in America right now, a competition among three distinct views of the world. The first view is held by those who think capitalism is the best and fairest economic system the world has ever seen. The second is held by those who think socialism is the answer to a host of problems from climate change to inequality. Then there are those who are pushing a watered-down or hyphenated capitalism, which is the slow path to socialism.

Mark me down as a capitalist. I grew up in South Carolina as the daughter of Indian immigrants. My mom started a small business selling clothes and gifts. She worked hard and showed my brothers, my sister and me what it meant to live the American dream. The U.S. is a country where people can find jobs that match their talents and passions. America has lifted up more people and unleashed more prosperity than any other country in human history.

In 1800, you were lucky if you lived to be 40. A third of children didn’t live past 5. Since then, the U.S. has become an industrialized nation. Average real income per person has soared by 4,000% since 1800. Medical breakthroughs mean Americans live much longer. In 1820, 94% of the world lived in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.90 a day, adjusted for purchasing power. Today that figure is closer to 10%. Because of capitalism, the world is cleaner, healthier and wealthier than ever.

As governor of South Carolina, I saw capitalism work. Pro-market policies helped bring our state more than $20 billion in capital investment and created jobs in every county. But I saw something different during my time as ambassador to the U.N. I was reminded that not every country enjoys the same freedom and prosperity. More than 1.5 billion people still suffer under socialist regimes.

AMERICAN INGRATE: ILHAN OMAR AND THE PROGRESSIVE ISLAMIST TAKEOVER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Tuesday, February 25th, 2020

NEWLY RELEASED BOOK

POSTED ON FEBRUARY 24, 2020 BY SCOTT JOHNSON IN BOOKSILHAN OMARMEDIAMINNESOTA

AMERICAN INGRATE: ILHAN OMAR

I met up with the Federalist’s Ben Weingarten in Minneapolis this past fall when he was in the process of finishing American Ingrate: Ilhan Omar and the Progressive Islamist Takeover of the Democratic Party. With a foreword by Andrew McCarthy, the book is published in paperback today by Bombardier Books; it is available on Amazon at the link.

Ben sent me and a few other students of Omar a copy of the book in galley last month. At my request, Ben forwarded the blurbs his early readers offered to recommend the book. With Ben’s permission, I am posting them below in lieu of a formal review of the book this morning:

Victor Davis Hanson: “Benjamin Weingarten professionally and thoroughly dissects the strange case of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and demonstrates that much about the congresswoman is an enigma at best and a fraud at worst. We do not know, and authorities are apparently not interested in, her strange marriage…her tax avoidance, her violations of campaign financing laws, and her apparent disgust with a country that she…sought out and presently finds profitable. Weingarten’s case study of Omar serves as a larger indictment of the therapeutic mindset, which Omar manipulated so well on her way to notoriety and power. Weingarten suggests that if Omar had not existed, she would have had to be invented, given that she is a metaphor for a larger American pathology of progressive virtue-signaling and, ultimately, self-loathing.” – Victor Davis Hanson, The Hoover Institution, Stanford University

Dennis Prager: “American Ingrate is a serious, deeply researched work that makes the compelling case Rep. Ilhan Omar is the new face of the Democratic Party, and delves deeply into her background and beliefs. It compellingly sets forth the argument that she not only personifies but leads a Progressive-Islamist alliance held together by the glue of hatred of America, of Judeo-Christian values, of Western civilization, and of Israel. Read it and weep. Or better, read it and fight back. This is a manual in that fight.” – Dennis Prager, nationally radio talk show host and columnist, co-founder of PragerU, and New York Times bestselling author of ten books, including, most recently, the first two volumes of The Rational Bible, a five-volume commentary on the Torah
