BOOK REVIEW – THE END OF EUROPE

THE END OF EUROPE
Dictators, Demagogues, and the Coming Dark Age
by James Kirchick
Published  March 2017
Once the world’s bastion of liberal, democratic values, Europe is now having to confront demons it thought it had laid to rest. The old pathologies of anti-Semitism, populist nationalism, and territorial aggression are threatening to tear the European postwar consensus apart. In riveting dispatches from this unfolding tragedy, James Kirchick shows us the shallow disingenuousness of the leaders who pushed for “Brexit;” examines how a vast migrant wave is exacerbating tensions between Europeans and their Muslim minorities; explores the rising anti-Semitism that causes Jewish schools and synagogues in France and Germany to resemble armed bunkers; and describes how Russian imperial ambitions are destabilizing nations from Estonia to Ukraine. With President Trump now threatening to abandon America’s traditional role as upholder of the liberal world order and guarantor of the continent’s security, Europe may be alone in dealing with these unprecedented challenges.

Based on extensive firsthand reporting, this book is a provocative, disturbing look at a continent in unexpected crisis.

James Kirchick is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, a columnist for Tablet magazine, and a correspondent for the Daily Beast. His articles and essays appear frequently in the Los Angeles Times, the Washington PostPOLITICO, the London Spectator and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

POMPEO ON WHAT TRUMP WANTS

Is the Trump administration out to wreck the liberal world order? No, insisted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview at his office in Foggy Bottom last week: The administration’s aim is to align that world order with 21st-century realities.

Many of the economic and diplomatic structures Mr. Trump stands accused of undermining, Mr. Pompeo argues, were developed in the aftermath of World War II. Back then, he tells me, they “made sense for America.” But in the post-Cold War era, amid a resurgence of geopolitical competition, “I think President Trump has properly identified a need for a reset.”

Mr. Trump is suspicious of global institutions and alliances, many of which he believes are no longer paying dividends for the U.S. “When I watch President Trump give guidance to our team,” Mr. Pompeo says, “his question is always, ‘How does that structure impact America?’ ” The president isn’t interested in how a given rule “may have impacted America in the ’60s or the ’80s, or even the early 2000s,” but rather how it will enhance American power “in 2018 and beyond.”

Mr. Trump’s critics have charged that his “America First” strategy reflects a retreat from global leadership. “I see it fundamentally differently,” Mr. Pompeo says. He believes Mr. Trump “recognizes the importance of American leadership” but also of “American sovereignty.” That means Mr. Trump is “prepared to be disruptive” when the U.S. finds itself constrained by “arrangements that put America, and American workers, at a disadvantage.” Mr. Pompeo sees his task as trying to reform rules “that no longer are fair and equitable” while maintaining “the important historical relationships with Europe and the countries in Asia that are truly our partners.”

THE FACTUAL HISTORY OF ISLAM IN EUROPE

Saturday, April 7th, 2018
The Elitist governments of Europe must have a death wish for Europe to be welcoming  Islamists into their countries.  Are they so ignorant of the European  historical facts of Islam attempting to conquer Europe in the past?      Read on, it is truly amazing !  Nancy   By the way.  Here in the U.S., CAIR , Muslim Brotherhood, and the Muslim Student Association are just a few of the Islamic front organizations whose real purpose is to infiltrate our government and our society.    Please click on   these links for more information about these groups  www.gatestoneinstitute.org/9770/muslim-brotherhood-front-organizations

YES, “ISLAM IS PART OF OUR HISTORY”

… but hardly in the way that European elites claim.

Raymond Ibrahim is a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center

European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans recently chaired a roundtable with ten Muslim imams from six EU Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands).  Afterwards Timmermans announced that “the Commission is strongly committed to promoting diversity in Europe. Islam is part of our history, Islam is part of our present and Islam will be part of our future.”

Such assertions are as true as the assumptions they are based on—and whether such assumptions are grounded in historical facts or fictions. In prefacing his claims about Islam’s historic role in Europe by saying “the Commission is strongly committed to promoting diversity in Europe,” it is clear which perception Timmermans is invoking.

The true, historically documented role that Islam played has a much different story to tell: in the early seventh century, sword-waving Arabs burst out of the Arabian Peninsula and in a few decades conquered some two-thirds of what then constituted the Christian world—from Syria and Egypt in the east to Carthage and Spain in the west and everything in between.  One hundred years after the death of their prophet (traditionally dated to 632), they were in the heart of France where, thanks to their defeat at Tours in 732, and other Frankish victories, the whole of Europe was also not conquered.

But where lands could not be subjugated, bodies still could, and for the next few centuries the jihad turned into a giant slave trade of European flesh, as slave raids left virtually no part of Europe untouched (even the Viking raids in northern Europe were in large measure fueled by Arab gold).

THE REIGN OF THE ELITES IS CRUMBLING IN EUROPE, TOO

Thursday, April 5th, 2018

ON THE RUN EVERYWHERE  – THE REIGN OF THE ELITES IS CRUMBLING IN EUROPE, TOO
 – – Wednesday, March 21, 2018

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

The natives are restless everywhere, and they’re frightening the elites. The political parties of the social democrats, and even the Socialists, are crumbling all across Europe. A new version of class war is shaping a new kind of politics, and the implications are worldwide.

Trying to find clues to what’s ahead for America by examining the entrails of European politics is a fool’s errand. Europe, even with its treasures of arts, literature and music, is after all what the first settlers escaped from.

Barack Obama and his friends set out to “transform” America into a version of the European welfare state, but the republic was saved, at least for a while, by the bell that tolled in November 2016.

The Trump phenomenon, with all its populist bells and whistles, echoes across Europe. The Socialist Party in France was the governing majority only two years ago, and last year it won only 7 percent of the vote. The party has all but disappeared in the parliament. Germany’s prevailing Social Democrats fell to winning only 20 percent in elections this year, and the Democratic Party in Italy didn’t do much better.

The story is similar in Poland, Hungary and the Czech State, with echoes in Spain, the Netherlands and Scotland, where liberal, leftist, and progressive (pick a label) parties were kings of the mountain only yesterday.

It’s not difficult to discern the reasons why, observes the perceptive John O’Sullivan in National Review, “because so many agonized social democrats have already done so.” The liberal parties, much like the Democrats in the United States, abandoned their base among those who take pride in their blue-collar origins. “The crumbling happened,” he writes, “because social democrats, who were increasingly progressive middle-class intellectuals, usually working in the public sector, lost interest in blue-collar issues and were actively hostile to the conservative social values — patriotism, hard work, church — that appealed to workers as much as to the [property class]. Eventually the workers noticed and began to drift off to other parties.”

The socialist parties, like the Democrats and other liberals (or “progressives”) here in America, forgot who they were, where they came from and where they promised to go. Extreme environmentalism, radical feminism, undisciplined immigration and aggressive gay rights replaced the values and interests of the European working class. David Goodheart, a reformed leftist and a prominent British journalist and author, identifies this phenomenon as a division of the “somewheres,” locally rooted workers, and the “anywheres,” rootless professionals at home wherever they go. The disaffected “somewheres” were replaced in the blue-collar base by those gays, feminists, minorities and highly educated professionals. So far there aren’t enough of them to make up for the shrinkage.

This collapse of the social-democratic parties seemed like manna from heaven for parties on the European right, or at least a gift from the left. The Conservatives in Britain, for example, celebrated what they reckoned was their “permanent victory.” But they had not reckoned with the iron law, first identified in the United States but a law that applies everywhere, that “nothing recedes like success.”

Decisive victories in national elections in the United States were confidently said at the time to have buried the Democrats forever after George McGovern lost 49 states in 1972, and again after Walter Mondale carried only his home state of Minnesota in 1984. Mr. Mondale would have lost that but for the kindness of Ronald Reagan, who declined to make a late appearance in Minneapolis that his pollsters said would push him over the top. With the election won he wouldn’t embarrass a man in his home state. In the event he lost the state by only 10,000 votes. No presidential candidate is likely ever again to have the opportunity to win every state.

The French political scientist Pierre Manent sees the turmoil in loyalties and long-standing ties as pitting “populist demagogy of the left against the fanaticism of the center” in a struggle that will only become more bitter. The center, or the elites, will try to keep out the barbarian horde but the voters will keep trying to go around the establishment center, and will finally break it down.

The elites everywhere regard themselves as much aggrieved. They think themselves entitled to control everything because they’re wiser, smarter, of a higher morality, and thus entitled. The barbarian horde everywhere is not always right, but the elites in Europe, as in the United States, are learning that the horde will be accommodated, the hard way or the easy way

PRAGUE VS NORWAY

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

This article really hits home for me.   I spent several days in Prague in 1982 on a trip to what was then Czechoslovakia, to find  family roots.  I was so impressed with the beauty of Prague.  Their town center was like stepping back in time to the 1500’s  .  Just wonderful.   I was  living in Norway at the time so this article, written by a Norwegian,  really sends chills as it  describes the very negative changes that have taken place in Norway since I was  living  there in the 1980’s.  So tragic.   Thanks to Dee Sams for sharing this article.  Nancy

GLIMPSING THE “NEW EUROPE” IN PRAGUE

What might have been.

Tuesday, February 20. It’s our first time in Prague, and – except for a couple of visits to Berlin – K.’s first time on territory that was once part of the Warsaw Pact. Today, as we’re wont to do on arrival in a new city, we passed on museums and other cultural attractions, preferring instead to walk and walk and walk – to get a sense of the place and the people and start finding our way around.

After several hours of wandering along the winding streets and across cobbled squares dominated by churches, we came back to our hotel and had a drink at the bar. After two gin and tonics, I saw that K. had tears in his eyes. I looked at him quizzically. He could hardly get the words out.

“I’m so angry at my country’s government!” he finally exploded.

The country in question being Norway.

K. explained. We had just seen a good deal of Prague, and had passed heaven knows how many thousands of people. Not once had we seen a hijab. Let alone a niqab or burka.

“In this whole big city, not one!” he cried. “And yet in that little town where we live – in the middle of nowhere! – you can’t look out of the window for a minute without seeing one.”

For us, the Islamization of Western Europe had been a constant topic of conversation for almost twenty years. We’d voiced anger, frustration, despondency, cynicism. But I’d never seen him get teary-eyed about it.

MERKEL: POLITICAL BLACKMAIL

Friday, February 23rd, 2018

Merkel is insane – Can’t she see how she is tearing Europe apart by her insistence on forcing  foreign cultures on Europeans that are incompatible to their culture?
Americans have a front row seat in watching a leader destroy the European nations that have a shared national history and compatible cultures.      Thanks to Charlie Hendrix of Ohio for sharing this article.  Nancy

Merkel: EU Funds to Be Linked to Accepting Third World Migrants

By Virginia Hale    February 23, 2018
EXCERPT FROM THIS ARTICLE:
Alternative for Germany (AfD) co-leader Alexander Gauland described the idea of linking EU funds to taking in migrants from the third world “political blackmail”…….    Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán also hit back at the EU project to force multiculturalism on the whole bloc in his State of the Nation address last weekend, declaring: “Hungary will only express solidarity with Western European leaders who want to rescue their country and its Christian culture.”
 http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/02/23/merkel-eu-funds-third-world-migration/

German leader Angela Merkel has called for European Union funding to be based on nations’ willingness to take in third world migrants.

Speaking ahead of a Brussels summit with other leaders of EU nations, the German Chancellor said fighting for “shared European values” should be at the heart of the bloc’s spending decisions.

“Solidarity cannot be a one-way street,” she insisted in the Bundestag.

“With the distribution of structural funds, we must ensure that the allocation criteria in future reflect the engagement of many regions and municipalities in absorbing and integrating migrants.”

THERE ARE TOO MANY WHITE PEOPLE IN SZEKESFEHERVAR

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

Be sure to watch the wonderful video of the town that is included in the article.     Nancy
VIDEO
Gates of Vienna

A major Hungarian city submitted a brief video about itself to a European competition, only to be rejected at the entry level because the city was too, well, white. And Christian, too — another point against the city.

CrossWare, who translated the article below, includes this prefatory note:

Székesfehérvár is my hometown, a thousand-year-old city, where the original Royal Court resided. Dozens of kings and queens are buried beneath the city’s cathedral, but it is also a modern town. Many high-tech companies set up shop here; the area is sometimes described as the “Hungarian Silicon Valley”.

Back during the Christmas season Gates of Vienna posted a couple of pictures showing the Fair without any Merkel Legos or machine guns…

This was the video submitted for the competition: “Székesfehérvár Full of Life”

The translated article from 888.hu:

EU Jury: In Székesfehérvár there are too many whites and too few migrants

An EU jury decided to recommend the entries by Győr, Debrecen and Veszprém for the finals of the European Capital of Culture (EKF 2023) project. Among the seven submissions to date, the EU’s “unrelated international experts” rejected the submission of Székesfehérvár’s debut film: “There are too many happy white people and crosses, and not enough migrants”.
